Simply Swedish
The Gustavian pieces in the entry hall of this Vermont cottage are a simple and elegant style of Swedish country of the mid 18th C. Sweden's furniture makers of that era were greatly influenced by the classical lines of Louis XVI of France, but drastically simplified the style by using more primitive materials. The pale whites, blues and gray tones allow the light and natural textures to shine forth. The use of crystal sconces and chandeliers helped to reflect the light during the long, dark winters of the north. These 19th C. sconces are lit by candles. In the living room, we introduced a cheerful floral fabric on the chair to add a playful element. An extensive collection of blue and white Staffordshire platters and Ironstone pitchers are displayed elegantly on both sides of the fireplace. The rooms are bright yet cozy, evoking a feeling that encourages gathering by the fire or a casual dinner with friends.
